Choosing a GPS band for your child

A useful GPS band starts with a family need, not the longest feature list. Before comparing products, picture an ordinary day and the moment when a clearer connection would help.

1. Start with the day, not just the age

A younger child visiting grandparents may need something different from an older child walking to an activity. Write down the situations you want to support and who is responsible in each one. Decide whether location alone would be useful or whether talking to a trusted adult would make a difference. A band should support the independence your child is ready for.

2. Separate finding a location from sharing it

GPS estimates a location; a network connection allows that information to reach another device. Ask how updates are delivered, which countries and networks are supported, and what an old location looks like in the app. Buildings and weak coverage can affect results. A map pin without a recent timestamp is not the same as knowing where someone is now.

3. Check the ordinary details

Before buying, look for confirmed battery performance, charging routine, strap size, comfort, water resistance and phone requirements. Ask whether there is a subscription and what happens when service ends. Let your child try the fit where possible. A device left on a charger is not useful on the journey it was meant for.

4. Agree on a routine together

Explain who can view location and why. Practise a meeting point and a separate way to ask for help. Discuss what to do if the device is off, coverage is missing or a parent cannot answer. Revisit the arrangement as your child grows. Kaitsa Mini and Connect are still concepts in development, so final specifications and performance should be checked when published.
